Mosaic Project at the Obelisk Day Service, Skerries

In November of 2020 during a time of lockdown due to COVID-19, the germ of an idea began: Prosper could celebrate inclusion in a creative way alongside the wall of Prosper Fingal’s day service development at The Obelisk, Skerries, which was being constructed at the time.

The idea grew, and the collaboration was born between Prosper Fingal’s Skerries and Seatown Road Day Services, Fingal Community College TY students and their art teacher Siobhan Lynch, with local artist Dave West leading out on the project.  With the simple brief to come up with a decorative and artistic solution for the laneway alongside the new build, the groups most certainly delivered.

The groups communicated through Zoom in the most creative way, and came up with a design concept of a 10-part series of mosaic panels celebrating the cultural heritage in Fingal.  The panels depict the landmarks, people, wildlife and our surroundings that we are so lucky to have around us.

It was an amazing way of coming together in a time when everyone was apart.  The groups worked on smaller sections of the panels remotely, steered by the expertise of Dave West.  They met up virtually each week, not only to show each other their progress on the panels, but also to get to know one another.  The students and people supported by Prosper shared their favourite songs, hobbies and performed for one another on their weekly meetings in addition to developing what is now a beautiful 10-part series of mosaics along “The Prosper Wall”.  The project taught all involved so much about inclusion and community integration, and celebrated the abilities and talents of everyone involved.
